JAHANGIR JAKHANGIROV-100 (1921)
Azerbaijani melomaniacs celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of a composer whose name is written in gold on the pages of our musical history, educator, choirmaster, folk artist Jahangir Dzhakhangirov.
Jahangir Shirgasht oglu Jahangirov was born on June 20, 1921 in the village of Balakhany, Baku city in the family of a worker. After graduating from the 7-year-old music school, he studied at the Theater School, and since 1937-at the theoretical department of music school. In 1940, he joined the faculty of Azerbaijani folk music of Azerbaijani state conservatory, studied the basics of Azerbaijani people's music led by the genius Uzeir Hajibeyli, took the lessons of the composition from B.I.Zaydman.
He was awarded with various diplomas and honorary titles when he was young. In 1950, the composer was awarded the USSR State Prize for vocal and symphony poem “On the other side of Araz”, written in 1949
Jahangir Dzhakhangirov is a composer with his style and unique creative idea. He created magnificent works on the subject of love, patriotism, labor, etc. One of the unique features of the composer is a deep knowledge of Azerbaijani classical poetry, in particular the genre of Gazelle. This is confirmed by the cantats of the composer “Fizuli”, “Nasimi”, “Sabir”, “Huseyn Javid-59”. The composer was interested in classic poetry since a young age, especially the genre of the gazelle. So, on the 800th anniversary of Nizami Ganjevi, he wrote a romance based on the gazelle of the poet “Gul Jamal”. It was a continuation of the genre of the gazelles and romance of the great Uzeir Gajibeili.
Jahangir Dzhakhangirov is one of the composers who has perfected choral music in Azerbaijan. The merits of the composer on the development of choral music in Azerbaijan are also related to his public activities. So, in the 1940 s, the composer led the choral ensemble of the song and dances of the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic. In 1944-1960, he was the artistic director of the Azerbaijani radio and television choir. In this direction, the composer also sent his pedagogical activities, from 1975 to 1992 he headed the Department of Choral Conducting of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory, and provided important services in the training of national choral conductors. Most choir conductors operating today in Azerbaijan were his students.
Dzhakhangir Dzhakhangirov, who has an extensive creative heritage, turned to different genres of music. They wrote the vocal and symphony poem “Beyond Araz” (1949) for the soloist, choir and symphonic orchestra, the cantata “Song of Friendship” (1956), “Fizuli” (1959). “Nasimi” (1973 ), “Sabir” (1962), “Huseyn Javid-59” (1984), “Great Victory” (1985), “Azad oratorium” (1957), “Destiny Khanende” (1978) and other works. One of the branches of Jahangir Jakhangirov's work is his beautiful songs. In addition to addressing various large-scale works, the composer always prefers the song genre and composed beautiful songs. “Elegance”, “How to draw”, “My gentle smile”, “My homeland”, “Care”, “Mother” etc. embrace different artistic content and, as always, occupy a great place in the repertoire of performers.
