Different National Cultures Meet in a Museum

This topic was chosen by The State Museum of Musical Culture of Azerbaijan as its response to the motto “Museum collections make connections” offered by ICOM. The event taken place in the Museum on May 18, 2014 provided many examples of intercultural cooperation. The Museum director Dr.Alla Bayramova in her speech noted that a number of the Azerbaijani composers created the works dedicated to other national cultures, such as Gara Garayev’s ballet related to South Africa, The Path of Thunder (1957), where he tried to imitate the rhythms and tunes of the African musical folklore. The Hungarian dance Csardas, composed by the Italian composer Vittorio Monti, was performed by the Ukrainian violinist Alexandra Vydria and The Ensemble of Ancient Musical Instruments of the Museum of Musical Culture of Azerbaijan. Polina Desyatichenko (Canada) and Yashito Katanoda (Japan) performed Azerbaijani mugham on Azerbaijani traditional musical instrument, the tar. Young Azerbaijani musicians played ethnic jazz, jazz-mugham on piano and harmonica. The concert also included music of Azerbaijani, Ukrainian, German, Russian and Polish composers.
